Make a Donation
Making a donation to charity is something most of us do, at least occasionally, sometimes much more often. Why do we make donations to charity, and do our donations do any good?
We make donations to charity for many reasons, some common to us all, others very personal. For example, it could be just that we don't have time to wait for our change when buying the morning paper and we say to the shop assistant, just put it in the charity box. We are touched emotionally by the same things, a photograph of a badly treated donkey, or someone in a wheelchair collecting to raise money for research, not to help themselves, but for future possible sufferers.
On a more personal note, it may be a friend or neighbour (or their child!) collecting for their favoured charity. It may not be one we would have chosen ourselves, but we offer support, sometimes to avoid the embarrassment of turning away someone we know.
The most personal of reasons is that we have someone who suffers from, or who has possibly died of, the disease being supported, so we feel we are doing anything we can to help them and others in their situation.
Whatever our reasons for supporting charities, we must do it! In any community, whether it is as local as our street, or as wide as the world, there will always be a range of people from the well off, both financially and in terms of health to those living in abject poverty, or in very poor health.
The only way a community can work is for those of us who are able, financially, physically or mentally, to help others less fortunate. This doesn't mean the very rich have to help the very poor, anyone who can spare a pound, or call on a sick neighbour, can be the one who is helping, even though at other levels, they may need the help of others themselves.
One of the ways we can help is to support charities whose sole reason for being there is to help people, animals, or communities, with whatever disease, disaster or ill-treatment which has befallen them.
